On any spiritual journey, it is wise to research the various modalities and to identify the ‘get-me-outta-here!’ signals if things become uncomfortable.
We strive to stay safe and sane on this colourful quest of self-discovery! I’m teasing a little, but as with any endeavour, it is necessary to keep your eyes and wits about you as you explore the many intriguing spiritual modalities, religions, teachings, philosophies, and communities. I have seen spiritual seekers become disappointed, disillusioned, confused, jaded, stressed, and have all the emotions imaginable because what they thought would bring them enlightenment did not.
Discernment is Key: Four Tips for Safe Spiritual Exploration
As a street-savvy spiritualist, measure your ongoing experiences and choices with these simple questions:
Is this a high-quality modality?
Picking a modality is very subjective. Whatever you choose, make sure you first list the key values that MUST be present—for example, Love, Integrity, Kindness, Freedom, Respect, and so on. Having an internal compass of what is acceptable and what is not is paramount to creating a good experience throughout your spiritual journey.
Does this community operate on love and integrity?
The conduct of members and administrators is also a factor. Notice how they act, control the narrative, restrict freedom, view the public, and treat one another. The teaching might be sound, but I have seen power and ego run rampant - making it unpleasant for sincere spiritual seekers to join or stay on. Find a conducive environment to maximise your experience.
What do my intuitive senses tell me?
Your intuition or gut feelings can help you choose and decide along your journey, as it picks up information that our physical senses cannot detect. Listen to your intuition above all else! I suggest practising listening to your intuition so it becomes clear and strong.
Should I continue this modality?
If you do not feel any positive results after a while, then perhaps it is time to move on to another modality. Sometimes, the content is deep and vast, so you might need to give it time. But if at any point you feel uncomfortable, you can stop and seek something else. It is also normal to go through many modalities on your journey – where you learn what you need at that juncture and move on. You may stick to one at some point, but there are no hard or fast rules.
There are many amazing teachings out there, but not everything is suitable for you. Make sure you maintain your sovereignty at all times and always assess the information being received with common sense and intuition. Remember to use the Four Tips for Safe Spiritual Exploration. Listen to your inner voice. You are wiser than you know, and only you are privy to what is best for you. Have fun exploring!
With Love & Blessings,
